RSS
News Feeds
are
rapidly becoming the way to publish news and information in a timely and
convenient fashion, without "pushing" email and cluttering one's
mailbox. By subscribing to a news feed, one can stay in touch with what's
new without having to go to a website and examine the content looking
for changes. The owner of the website publishes a news feed presenting
new items of interest that one can read at one's leisure. WIthout using
email. One subscribes without your email address being sent to anyone.
And it's easy ... that's why it's called Really
Simply Syndication.
How Do You Subscribe to RSS News Feeds?
By
using a "news reader"—sometimes called
a "news aggregator"—and it's quite easy. One of the
easiest to use is the news reader of Yahoo. With a Yahoo account,
you can easily add the news feed to your personalized MyYahoo page.
And similarly, you can add a news feed to your personalized Google page.
(There are other "news readers" available; See Other
RSS News Readers below.)
Here's how you do that:
(1) Click the icon associated with any item in the feed to which you wish to
subscribe. You will then be presented the complete feed along with subscription buttons along the top of the page.
(2) Click on the subscription button to add the feed to your MyYahoo page. (Or the button for Google). Follow the instructions provided to you by MyYahoo (or Google) for adding
the feed to your custom page.
If you do not have a Yahoo account, you will be given the opportunity to open one by Yahoo. You just provide a user ID, password and email address, and within a minute or two, you will have the news feed up and running on your personalized MyYahoo page. Whenever you visit your MyYahoo page, you will be presented with the very latest news and information.
Other RSS News Readers
There are also many news readers available online and that you can download for free.To subscribe to a news feed using one of those news readers, you will need to provide the address for the news feed. The easy way to get an
address for a feed is to click the or button associated with the feed and copy it from your browser address bar. Then paste it
in as directed by the news reader you've chosen.
Browsers with Built-In RSS News Readers
If you use the Safari v2 (by Apple), Internet Explorer v 7 or the Firefox v2, you can use its built-in news reader to read a feed. All you need to do to view the feed is click the
or button and your feed-capable browser will display it for you. You can bookmark the feed, just as you do for a webpage, and whenever you return to the feed, the most current items in the feed will be presented.
Check your browser to see how to get indications of new items being posted on a feed since the last time you viewed the feed.
